FAQs

We want your children to read well and to live up to their potential. So that this disability can be repaired and not hold them back from enjoying school, living a balanced life and excelling where they are enthusiastic and talented.

What areas of tutoring do you specialize in?

In essence, I help students who are struggling in school with either breaking things into parts or alternately seeing the big picture.  By working on some basic cognitive building blocks of learning like integrating communication between the senses, visualizing words, verbalizing thoughts and actions, and being able to break down and hear and see clearly phonemes, letters and pictures from a story in the minds eye, children find school much easier and more engaging.  Children who benefit the most from my work are often eager learners with many gifts who struggle to read or understand what they are reading and may have difficulty with math and following verbal instructions as well.  Much research has been done on neuroplasticity of late, and this work has been shown to actually rewire the brain so that new abilities form.

Many but not all of these children are diagnosed with Dyslexia.  I also enjoy teaching children to read for the first time from this approach, especially if they are getting a late start due to homeschooling or leaving a Waldorf School before their reading program is complete.

How long does the program usually last?

The learn to read program from start to finish usually takes about 60 hours of instruction for 1 hour a day, 5 days a week. In the summer it is possible to double up and do the program 2 hours a day for 60 hours.  I will let you know after the assessment if I think the child needs less time to reach his or her goals.

Do you teach in groups?

Usually by the time a student comes to me they have already tried group work and it is clear that they need a personalized, systematic, scaffolded, intensive program to make rapid progress.  The focus of my work is one on one tutoring, but occasionally I will bring in another child to make the practice sessions more fun.

Can you work with my child just once a week?

This work actually rewires the brain and as such, is most cost effective and efficient when done with intensity and frequency over a short period of time. We are not just developing skills here, but capacities.  However, once a student has made significant progress, I am fine with meeting less frequently, say weekly or biweekly for tune-ups until we are complete. If we meet less frequently, I would like time with you, the caregivers of the child so you can help your child to stimulate the dual coding and strengthening these new neural pathways on a daily basis.

Can I work with you to help my child to save money?

Yes. It is important to touch the material at least 5 days a week and I am happy schedule time to show you how to work with workbooks on days I am not working with your child.  I want to work with you to create a program that works for your family.

I have given up, our child has already tried so many programs. How do I know this is worth the investment?

We start with an assessment.  If it is clear to me that I am not the right person to help your child to read chapter books within 3 months, to help your child with comprehension and/or follow verbal directions; I will NOT accept myself as your child’s teacher.   If I see this is a good match and your child goes through the full 60 hour program with me in 3 months and is still not reading chapter books, I will give your students up to 10 free sessions until they are reading chapter books.

Also, your child’s educational future is a worthwhile investment. With reading and comprehension as a building block for all other learning-leveraging a successful intervention is priceless, as a change early on can make huge changes in your child future potentials..
